Living in Khutsong has become a challenge and a nightmare. Teachers and police officers have been unfairly dismissed. Residents have been assaulted and shot. Schooling has been badly affected. Homes, government buildings, guest houses and libraries have been burnt. The community is under constant police surveillance. But the government has refused to listen to the people.
On Thursday 11 Constitutional Court judges will hear the matter. To the SACP, the case is a very important development because we have unflinchingly supported the people. We chose the community over individuals.
What is of greater significance is that the court sits on the day on which our former national chairman, Yusuf Mohammed Dadoo, died in London 24 years ago.
As we continue to dip our revolutionary banners in his commemoration, we believe that the doctor did not die in vain. So we shall continue to fight whenever the masses are undermined.
The hearing gives both communities hope that someone will listen. Government has shown signs of relying too much on the court process, and this is worrying. The court will decide if this is the end or the beginning of the intensification of the struggle.
