NUM wants say at ANC indaba

The 262000-strong National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says it will influence the election of a non-factional leadership of the ANC at the party's national conference in December.

The 262000-strong National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says it will influence the election of a non-factional leadership of the ANC at the party's national conference in December.

"The NUM is of the view that while the leadership of the ANC will be decided by the ANC itself - and would not seek to dictate terms on the ruling party - the NUM remains an interested party and would seek to influence the outcome in a similar manner the ANC influences the outcome of leadership contests of its alliance partners," the NUM said yesterday.

It was of the view that the ANC was led by the working class and as such the leadership collective that would emerge should reflect the character of the ANC's constituency. - Eric Naki
