Choral music lovers will celebrate the memory of conductor, arranger and composer Jabulani Mazibuko at the Sowetan, Transnet Foundation and SABC Massed Choir Festival at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Each year a veteran or influential choral music exponent is honoured.
Those who have been praised for their exceptional contributions to the genre include composers Enoch Sontonga, Theriso Tsambo and the versatile Mzilikazi Khumalo.
Khumalo, together with Richard Cock, was the founding festival leader of this music showcase. They have since been replaced by a younger set of festival leaders, namely Ludumo Mangangane, Mokale Koapeng, Danny Pooe, Thabiso Mosabala and Thulasizwe Nkabinde.
Mazibuko will be honoured through a rendition of various popular and classical tunes by soloists soprano Xoliswa Nogwam, tenor Donald Majosi, bass singer Paul Madibeng, mezzo soprano Teresa de Wit and 20 choirs that will make up a powerful 1000-voice chorus.
The soloists and choirs will share the stage with guest artist Ringo Madlingozi and visiting group Royal Bafokeng Community Choir.
Musical backing will be provided by the Nation Building Orchestra.
Tickets - at R30 a person - are available at Computicket and at the venue.
