A 20-year-old Giyani, Limpopo, woman has been arrested in connection with the murder of her former boyfriend.
The incident allegedly happened at Ngovhe village, outside Giyani, on Wednesday night after the former boyfriend, Aaron Makhubela, went to the woman's house and allegedly tried to rape her.
The woman, who is married to another man, was attacked at her marital home while her husband was absent.
"We were told Makhubela went to the suspect's home and found her asleep," said Giyani police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe.
"But before he entered the house he allegedly knocked on the door and when nobody answered he then forced the door open."
Ngoepe said once inside the house, Makhubela who is in his mid-20s, allegedly attempted to rape the woman.
"When he could not succeed, Makhubela apparently produced a knife and a struggle ensued between him and his former girlfriend," he said.
"But the woman apparently overpowered Makhubela and disarmed him."
Ngoepe said the woman then allegedly used the knife to stab her alleged attacker.
"She allegedly stabbed him several times in the chest until he died."
He said that the woman was also injured during the ensuing fracas.
She was stabbed in the leg.
The woman was treated for minor injuries at Nkhensani Hospital and was later discharged.
She was arrested and sent to the Giyani police station holding cells. She is expected to appear in a local magistrate's court today on a murder charge.
"It appears as if the woman was acting in self-defence, but we are currently investigating circumstances surrounding the matter.
"Justice will prevail in this matter," said Ngoepe.
