Eastern Cape geographical names committee chairman Fumanekile Dyubhele has tendered his resignation while claiming that the name-changing process in the province would hit a snag.
Dyubhele said he had sent his resignation letter to Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Noxolo Abraham-Ntantiso.
He cited differences, which he refused to reveal, with the department officials from the directorate of museum and heritage as one of the reasons that forced him to resign.
"I would like to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the MEC.
"I have never had any misunderstanding with her," he said.
"I'm still waiting for her response."
Dyubhele said under the circumstances he had concluded it would not be easy for other committee members to perform their duties adequately.
He said this would negatively affect the progress of changing names in the province.
Abraham-Ntantiso said she was not aware of Dyubhele's resignation. She said she would consult her officials before making any statement.
She had just arrived in the province from Cape Town where she attended a Steve Biko 30:30 event.
UDM provincial spokesman Masiza Mhlathi said they were shocked by Dyubhele's resignation.
Mhlathi said that Dyubhele should not have parted ways with the committee.
"He should have sat down with the relevant stakeholders to iron out their differences.
"But I don't think the committee will be unable to perform its duties because he was not the only one," said Mhlathi.
