Men fight pension 'discrimination'

The Pretoria high court yesterday reserved judgment in a case seeking to have certain provisions of the Social Assistance Act, said to discriminate against men, declared unconstitutional.

The Pretoria high court yesterday reserved judgment in a case seeking to have certain provisions of the Social Assistance Act, said to discriminate against men, declared unconstitutional.

The application was brought by four Eastern Cape men presently excluded from getting state old-age pensions until they are 65 years. Women can apply at 60.

The applicants insisted that the legislation not only unfairly discriminated against men in the 60-64 age group, but also undermined their dignity.

Keith Matthee, acting on instructions of the Legal Aid Board's PE Justice Centre, argued that the disparity was not justified. - Sapa
