Emergency lane drivers nabbed

Johannesburg metro police arrested 107 motorists in the past week for driving in the emergency lane, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said yesterday.

Johannesburg metro police arrested 107 motorists in the past week for driving in the emergency lane, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said yesterday.

He said 32 of the arrests were made yesterday alone. The other 75 were made in the course of last week; 60% were of taxi drivers.

The arrests were mainly on the M1, N1 and Witkoppen Road.

Minnaar said motorists' complaints were behind the "special operation".

"This operation. will continue non-stop until such time as we need to review our policy," he said, adding that it would be conducted on all freeways and major roads in Johannesburg.

He said a similar operation was conducted in January, but that motorists were again increasingly using the emergency lanes. Arrests were being made as pleas and fines had been ignored. - Sapa
