Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Jack Bloom said student nurses at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital stay in deplorable conditions.

Bloom said he received several complaints before he inspected the building which he found badly maintained.

"There is one shower and two baths on each floor which houses 40 students. They are in a terrible conditions as are five toilets on each floor," he said.

Bloom said only one of the six lifts were working and most staff were forced to walk on the stairs, including pregnant females.

"Doctors on the 12th floor have to scurry down when called for an emergency. The cause of the problem is the termination of lifts maintenance contracts at Gauteng hospitals at the end of June this year."

Bloom said there had been three fires in the past two years in the building, but there were no emergency contact numbers displayed.

"Emergency exits are blocked with uncollected rubbish and old furniture."
