Cops injured in collision

Three people, including two police officers, were critically injured when a police van collided with a truck on the N11 near Newcastle on Friday morning, police said.

Three people, including two police officers, were critically injured when a police van collided with a truck on the N11 near Newcastle on Friday morning, police said.

Police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela said the collision took place at the intersection of Albert Wessels Road and the N11.

He said the truck attempted to turn into Albert Wessels Road and turned into the path of an oncoming police van on its way to the nearby settlement of Ingogo.

Two other vehicles collided with the lorry after the main collision.

Magudulela said two of the people in the police van were police officers while a third was a clerk working for the police. It is believed the fourth person might also be a policeman.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said three people - one man and two women - were in a critical condition. The fourth woman was slightly injured. He said one of the critically injured women was about five months pregnant.

They were taken to Newcastle private hospital. The truck driver and occupants of the other two vehicles were not injured. - Sapa
