The Limpopo detective who was burnt when a mysterious fire gutted his house in Seshego near Polokwane two weeks ago has died.
Captain Moses Ramosa, 53, a detective with the Polokwane police station, died on Wednesday at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg from third-degree burns.
This followed a mysterious fire that raged through his house on August 21, burning everything in his room, including clothes inside a wardrobe.
Ramosa had been airlifted to Milpark with severe burns on most of his body.
Police spokesman, Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said Ramosa died at 2am on Wednesday.
He said police were still investigating the cause of the fire.
"We are saddened by the loss of our colleague under such mysterious circumstances.
"But we will go deeper in our investigations to determine the real cause of Ramosa's death," said Ramatseba yesterday.
Ramosa was the main investigator in the case of a woman police captain who was arrested on charges of conspiracy to murder her husband. The alleged target works for the National Prosecuting Authority - the Scorpions - in Pretoria.
Christina Molokomme, 39, allegedly hired two would-be assassins to kill her husband, Phillip Molokomme, 51, using her own service pistol.
But the two men informed police about the plan and she was arrested in December.
Ramosa's wife refused to talk to the media.
It was initially reported that the fire might have been caused by someone trying to destroy the docket from Ramosa's home.
He had allegedly taken the docket home after an attempt was made to steal it from the police station.
Ramatseba said an inquest docket into Ramosa's death had been opened. This would be investigated concurrently with a case of arson, he said.
"Should it be established that the fire was caused deliberately, both charges will be changed to murder," he said.
