The PAC can be cured only if its members admitted that it was a sick political party, its Gauteng chairman, Thami ka Plaatjie said yesterday.
Ka Plaatjie was addressing the media in Johannesburg yesterday in response to the defections of former PAC deputy president and MP Themba Godi, MP Mofihli Likotsi, member of the Gauteng legislature Malesela Ledwaba and 39 councillors.
"The PAC cannot afford to die, but we have to admit that it is not business as usual. If you are sick, you have to admit that you need to be cured," said Ka Plaatjie.
He said when the party holds its national conference in December, strict systems for the election of leaders would be enforced to avoid producing leaders who would defect.
"As things stand, anybody can bring 10 buses loaded with supporters to a congress and get elected.
"People like Godi and his clique pumped their resources into getting elected."
Party president Letlapa Mphahlele said defectors had robbed the party of elected representatives.
"It also means a loss of funding related to party seats. Their decision was motivated by factionalism, power-mongering and careerism," he said.
