Jens Lehmann loses his cool

COLOGNE, Germany - German national goalkeeper Jens Lehmann lost his cool yesterday at a press conference for the Germany team when he was persistently asked about his future at English giants Arsenal.

The 37-year-old, set to play for Germany against Wales tomorrow, has been under increasing pressure at the North London club since he made costly blunders against Fulham and Blackburn recently in the Premier League.

But Germany's first-choice shot stopper ran out of patience when asked to comment on statements made by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, which had been interpreted in a negative light by a German journalist.

"Your whole interpretations of what has been said gets on my nerves," said an angry Lehmann during the press conference in Cologne ahead of Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier in Cardiff. "Do not ask me to interpret your interpretations."

Lehmann will play in tomorrow's Euro 2008 qualifier in Cardiff after recovering from a damaged achilles tendon he suffered during Germany's 2-1 win over England last month, and a sore elbow. But Wales striker Freddy Eastwood, who scored the winning goal on his debut against Bulgaria last month, said Lehmann is Germany's "weak point".

"When you look at the form I'm in and the form he's in, I definitely fancy my chances against him," Eastwood said. "We'll be looking at the German side for any weak points and I'm sure the gaffer will pick out Lehmann's form.

"Every player goes through a bad time and Lehmann seems to be having one at the start of this season. That's unlucky for him, but it's a good thing for us." - Sapa-AFP
