IFP chairman and the Zululand district municipality mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi yesterday urged people to vote during local, provincial and national elections.
She said voting was critical for the allocation of funds to different communities.
Magwaza-Msibi was speaking at rural KwaCeza, north of Zululand, during an official handing over to the community of the R250000 Mphakamiseni creche. She said those who shun voting were robbing themselves of an opportunity to get a bigger and better slice of the cake.
KwaCeza is one of the poorest areas in the province, with the majority of its adult population illiterate and the majority of the youth having only attained matric.
"Voting is very critical because in the end it assists in the allocation of funds, which has an indirect effect on service delivery to destitute communities.
"Remember that when you vote, you are not doing it for politicians, but for yourselves," Magwaza-Msibi said.
She said that because the people of KwaCeza had voted, they were reaping the rewards.
"We are here today to hand over this important building to you and your future generations.
"From today, this creche does not belong to the municipality, but to you and your children. This means that you should take good care of this facility.
"Broken windows or any damage is not entirely your responsibility," said Magwaza-Msibi.
Receiving the creche on behalf of the community, traditional leader Berkson Ndebele said the facility would go a long way in changing the future of the area's next generations.
Magwaza-Msibi also donated R10000 towards the buying of chairs and other necessities for the creche.
