The Greater Sedibeng Municipality in the Vaal has already started with its preparations for the 2010 World Cup.
Under the leadership of mayor Mlungisi Hlongwane, they have established a political steering committee to oversee all the projects relating to the World Cup.
In addition, the municipality has formed five working committees, said Yunus Chamda, executive director for planning and development.
"The five committees deal with the Vereeniging central business district, Sharpeville precinct, tourism, soccer development as well as safety and security," said Chamda.
"We may not be one of the host cities but the executive mayor is quite pleased with our preparations, which are at an advanced stage.
"We have also unveiled a development strategy which is focusing on four areas: urban renewal, tourism, soccer development, and safety and security.
"Dr Molefi Oliphant [president of the South African Football Association] is one of the soccer administrator who has been briefed about our plans."
Star Hlongwane, a member of Safa Sedibeng region strategic committee, said: "We are working closely with Greater Sedibeng Municipality. There are major developments taking place in Sedibeng around the 2010 World Cup, we want our communities to benefit from the tournament."
