The Mpumalanga economic and planning department head, Simangele Sekgobela, has resigned.

This was announced by the MEC for the department, Craig Padayachee, yesterday.

Padayachee said Sekgobela submitted her resignation to Premier Thabang Makwetla, who accepted it with effect from September 1.

Her arrival in the department came as a swap with the then head of department (HOD) for economic development and planning, Rabeng Tshukudu. He is currently HOD for the finance department.

Sekgobela yesterday attributed her resignation to a "need to change career".

"I will rest for a month or so before deciding what my next career will be. Farming is also on my mind," she said.

Sekgobela became the departmental HOD for economic and planning in September 2005.

Previously she was HOD for finance and official head of the treasury since January 2005.

Prior to that she was employed by the Industrial Development Corporation as the deputy chief economist of the research and information department.

She joined the Industrial Development Corporation in 2002 as a senior economist in the research department responsible for the policy unit.

Sekgobela chairs the advisory board of the South African Savings Institute since 2003.

She joined them in 2001 as an advisory board member.
