A Nelspruit policeman was arrested after local casino CCTV cameras captured him picking up and pocketing a customer's wallet.
The wallet was later found in the casino toilets without its contents that had totalled R800.
The policeman has been charged with theft.
Police say the policeman went to gamble at Emnotweni Casino in Nelspruit on Friday night.
A man who was gambling on a slot machine next to the policeman dropped his wallet.
Not aware that the casino had CCTV cameras recording events, the policeman quickly picked up and pocketed the wallet before walking towards the toilets where he disappeared.
When the other gambler realised his wallet was missing, he approached the casino security, who checked footage of their cameras and, bingo, they saw their man.
Police spokesman Inspector Dawie Pretorius said the policeman is attached to the detective section at Nelspruit police station.
"One of our members has been arrested in connection with theft. He was released on bail and is expected to appear in court today."
When the security personnel pounced on the policeman, he was found in possession of R20000. He said the money was part of his bonus paid out earlier in the day.
Security took him to the toilets where they found the empty wallet.
The policeman was then arrested.
