Sponsors of the North West Fashion Week need to seriously consider spending their money on worthier causes.
The event aims to "promote and develop emerging fashion designers" but is actually a stage for big no-hopers, who should rather consider careers in different fields.
Sponsored by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, this project keeps unleashing the most laughable lines. And this is exactly where the problem lies. There are just too many people who deem themselves designers just because they are able to thread a needle.
Just like the Idols talent show, talented designers have to be sifted from the dressmakers who should not even be allowed near a sewing machine.
Thankfully, seasoned designer Ephraim Molingoana of Ephymol has seen the light on their behalf and has launched a talent search of the same nature.
"The truth is, that haute couture takes mastery and those traits only come with time."
Molingoana hopes the search will become a yearly event because "bad designers compromise good designers' work".
