A Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, woman who discovered that she was unknowingly married to a foreigner had her marriage annulled by the Department of Home Affairs.
Busisiwe Khoza, 25, pictured, said yesterday she was happy she was now free to marry her fiance, who had paid ilobola for her after their long fight against the bogus marriage.
Khoza said she discovered that she was married to a man known only to her as Mohammed when she went to the Home Affairs Department in Boksburg to change her surname.
She said she lodged a complaint with the department and, after investigations, it was found that her marriage was fraudulent.
The spokesman for the department, Mantshele Tau, has confirmed Khoza's marriage was fraudulent and has advised her to go to the nearest Home Affairs offices to apply for a new identity document.
"We will give her a letter which will assist her in applying for a new ID," said Tau.
Tau warned of women who were exploiting the system by getting themselves married for money, only to dispute the marriage later.
Tau stressed, however, that complaints about bogus marriages had dropped after the "Check Your Marriage Status" campaign launched by Home Affairs Minister Noziviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
