The African National Congress parliamentary caucus yesterday appointed former Greater Johannesburg Mayor Isaac Mogase as the party's chief whip.

Mogase takes over from Andries Nel, who has been the acting chief whip since Tony Yengeni stepped down.

Yengeni relinquished his position after he was jailed for accepting a huge discount for a 4x4 from one of the companies awarded the government's multi-billion rand arms acquisition programme and not disclosing this to the legislature.

Nel has been appointed Mogase's deputy.

Mogase has been an ANC MP since 2004, and has been a member of the portfolio committee on provincial and local government.

He is also a former president of the Soweto Civic Association.

Mogase has received accolades in recognition of his role in the democratic order.

These include a Unesco award for Africa's Mayor of Peace in 1999, and a Lions International award for service to the citizens of Johannesburg.
