Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa said the road linking Tshwane with Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, renamed the Albertina Sisulu freeway, was symbolic of the values she stood for.
Shilowa officially renamed the R21 and R24 after Sisulu during a ceremony attended by, among others, the Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe, in Bapsfontein yesterday.
"Umama Sisulu has stood for justice, equality, ethical conduct, and above all, unity.
"It was through her and her comrades in the women's movement that the world began to appreciate the reality that black women in apartheid South Africa bore triple oppression of being black, being workers and being women," said Shilowa.
Other than the three metro councils of Gauteng, the road stretches to the West Rand district municipality.
Shilowa said Commission and Main Reef streets as far as Randfontein would also be renamed after Sisulu.
Shilowa said the challenge of building non-racialism would not be complete until places were renamed.
He said the government was aware there were "opponents of change who were using name changes to divide society and advance a racist agenda".
"Through their attitudes they convey a message that says black people, their culture and heritage are worth nothing and should not be elevated to any prominent level outside of informal settlements and tribal areas."
