The City of Tshwane has honoured women for the role they have played in policing in the area.
More than 500 Metro policewomen in uniform and more than 300 community members attended a ceremony at the Rethabile sports grounds in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
Among the guests were the executive mayor of Tshwane, Gwen Ramokgopa, and the director of the Metro police, Kamala Ahomed.
Ramokgopa stressed the importance of Metro policemen and women working together for the good of the communities.
"Women were excluded from playing a significant role as police officers by past laws and practices, but history has proven that men cannot do it all on their own," she said.
"By working together in the past year, Tshwane Metro police were able to reduce road fatalities by 15percent. There is no single fire incident we did not respond to, where both families and businesses called for our help."
She added that the Metro police department would become more involved in domestic violence and would respond to more public calls.
"Our role is to reduce crime, so we are going to step in where the SAPS can't. Last year we were able to electrify streets and 24000 houses in Pretoria.
"We were also able to formalise and eradicate informal settlements," she said.
Ahomed said: "We are celebrating our role in a field which was previously dominated by men. We appreciate all the women who didn't sit back during a month that is dedicated to us, but emphasised passion in their jobs."
