Five men who were found in possession of electrical appliances valued at R400000 were arrested for armed robbery.

Durban Metro police spokesman Thozali Tyala said the suspects had allegedly hijacked a truck delivering TVs in Malvern outside Durban and sped off in four cars.

He said before the suspects fled the scene they locked the truck driver and his assistant inside the vehicle.

"But the suspects were arrested after the police were tipped off. A member of the public informed the police about the four cars which were seen off-loading many TV sets at two different houses in the area," said Tyala.

He said police rushed to the area and upon their arrival they arrested the five suspects, but three others managed to escape.

Police recovered an illegal pistol, about 51 TVs and three DVD players while searching the two houses.

"The occupants of the truck were also released from the back of the locked truck which was dumped at the scene of the crime. The truck was recovered after another community member informed the police about the abandoned truck," he said.

"The truck occupants positively identified the goods and the suspects," said Tyala.

"We want to thank the members of the community for helping the police fight crime. The community is the eyes and ears of the law enforcement agencies."
