Protest against McBride 'bias'

The SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is to protest in Germiston tomorrow against "preferential treatment" received by Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride.

The SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is to protest in Germiston tomorrow against "preferential treatment" received by Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride.

The union said yesterday 9000 of its East Rand branch members were expected to join the march.

Samwu called for the consistent application of discipline to all council employees, especially regarding the car crash case involving McBride in December, and the council's failure to discipline him for the incident.

Samwu said McBride was on paid leave and his legal costs were being paid, which was preferential treatment. It said a commission of inquiry into McBride's affairs should be reinstated because its work was not complete.

The union also wanted contract workers to be paid the same as those employed by Ekurhuleni Municipality, and that workers be paid the "most favourable" stand-by allowance. - Sapa
