'Let these Zim people vote'

It was vital to ensure that displaced Zimbabweans were allowed to vote in the country's coming elections, the SA Council of Churches said yesterday.

Many Zimbabweans had been displaced through following their conscience in a quest for human rights and a peaceful political solution, said SACC president Professor Tinyiko Maluleke.

He noted "with appreciation" that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change supported the participation of displaced Zimbabweans in the elections. This was "just as exiled South Africans were permitted to do" at the time of South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, he pointed out. "Denying such a great number of Zimbabweans the right to exercise their vote will inevitably jeopardise the perceived legitimacy of the electoral results," said Maluleke.

In a statement, the SACC said yesterday that the crisis in Zimbabwe needed "urgent intervention". - Sapa
