More than 400 women are expected to gather at Turffontein Racecourse tonight where the Sowetan Women's Club will be hosting Women's Month celebrations.

Political activist and commissioner for gender equality Nomboniso Gasa will deliver the main speech on women empowerment, which promises to be motivational and inspirational.

Author of the book Women in Southern African History: They Move Boulders and Cross Rivers, Gasa will share the podium with marketing consultant Zanele Maphalala of Old Mutual Retail Mass Market.

Maphalala will share tips on how to manage finances.

Gasa's involvement in politics led to her many detentions, which started at the age of 14 in the former Transkei.

She has a keen interest in feminism in Africa and women's role in history. Her current focus is on her book, The Making of a Man in Xhosa Society, a historic and feminist critique of cultural practices and their continued and changing meanings.

Businesswoman Makheni Motana will direct the event and popular singer Thembisile Ntaka, a former member of the Coca-Cola Popstar group Adela, will entertain guests.

The event starts at 7pm and bookings can be made by calling Puleng Maepho on 011-883-8829.

The cost is R130 for members and R150 for non-members. Non-members wishing to join the club can be signed up at the venue. Old Mutual, Playtex, Spekko Rice, Mageu Number 1 and Aranda Blankets are sponsoring the event.
