Our own kind

A few years ago Sowetan ran a cartoon in which a human walked past a pride of lions.

One of the lions asked what creature it was.

"It is a human being. They are a funny species. They also eat their own children," responded another lion.

The moral of the story is that, while claiming to be highest in the animal kingdom, human beings were the only species that, instead of protecting its offspring, actually went out of its way to devise devious plans to harm them.

The rise in the incidence of abuse of women and children in our society in the past decade is a matter of serious concern.

Generating a momentum that seeks to neutralise this kind of social malaise must be the goal of all who care about the future of our country.
