Zimbabweans deserve respect

South Africans in general, and white farmers in particular, must stop complaining about Zimbabweans crossing the border into our country. Who gave the white farmers in Musina a licence to arrest and detain the Zimbabweans?

Just because their economy is destroyed, people think Zimbabweans are half-human. No one denies that Robert Mugabe got it wrong with his autocratic style of leadership. But the fact that he was betrayed resulting in him making emotional decisions should not be ignored.

Even if Mugabe is so wrong, that does not give South Africans the right to treat Zimbabweans with disrespect. Most of the Zimbabweans crossing the border are Ndebeles from Bulawayo, Tsholotsho and other Matabeleland areas. By crossing the border they are simply returning home because they are erstwhile Zulus who crossed into Zimbabwe around the 1880s.

I expect Bongani Khumalo from KwaZulu-Natal to treat Bongani Khumalo from Bulawayo with respect because they are blood relatives. I expect Zulus to take centre stage in welcoming their prodigal brothers and sisters back home. I don't understand why they are not told to apply for citizenship.
