People living in Ndhambi village outside Giyani in Limpopo yesterday went on a wild rampage after the burial of a man allegedly killed by his wife and two sons last week.
Villagers ran amok, destroying properties owned by the family.
Police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday confirmed the situation had deteriorated after the funeral of William Mabunda, 42.
He said angry villagers set fire to a car belonging to one of Mabunda's sons before ransacking the family's houses.
Ngoepe said the villagers allegedly first removed items belonging to the deceased and torched the rest.
He said police arrested five people and charged them with malicious damage to property and public violence.
Ngoepe said the anger was allegedly sparked by information that the suspects had been granted bail during their court appearance last week.
"Apparently villagers were opposed to the granting of bail to the suspects. When news reached them that the wife and sons had been granted bail, they vented their anger on the property of the suspects," Ngoepe said.
"We are worried about the manner in which the villagers behaved themselves because every person has a right to bail," he said.
The suspects, Parasina Mabunda, 38, and her sons Eleck Mokwakwa, 19, and Aaron Mathebula, 18, are in the police holding cells in Giyani after failing to raise the bail money of R2000 each. They will appear again in the Giyani magistrates' court on September 21.
Ngoepe said they had deployed a large contingency of police personnel to deal with the situation in the village.
Mabunda was allegedly attacked with an assortment of objects and left for dead in his house last week. He was discovered by a relative, but died on arrival at the Nkhensani Hospital.
