Rural marathon to celebrate its 24th anniversary

The 24th anniversary run to celebrate the unique Powerade Three-Province Marathon will be held on Saturday September 8.

The 24th anniversary run to celebrate the unique Powerade Three-Province Marathon will be held on Saturday September 8.

This challenging 42,2km race through Northern Cape, North West and Free State, enables the participants to qualify for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.

The organiser of the race and chairman of the Christiana Marathon Club, Francois Conradie, says this is one of the few rural qualifying races, and its popularity increases annually due to the high standard.

"About 400 athletes are expected to enter this year. Last year athletes from as far as Mossel Bay participated in this race," he says.

The marathon will start at 6.30am in Grens Street, Jan Kempdorp, and the half-marathon at the same time, 13km out of Christiana. They will both be run according to Athletics SA rules. The fun run will start at 8am at the finishing point in Rivier Street, Christiana.

The marathon and half-marathon prize-giving will be at 11.30am at the finishing point. All participants in the full marathon will receive medals and the winners will receive trophies as well. Cash and various lucky draws will be up for grabs.

This year athletes can also receive permanent race numbers after completing five (orange), 10 (green) or 15 (navy) races. The loyal Jack Taote from Warrenton has completed 21 marathons. Louis Massyn, Johan Swart and Mark Hunt have respectively completed 20, 16 and 15 races. Altogether 142 athletes have already received orange, 19 green and four the navy permanent numbers.

Buses have been arranged for Saturday morning to pick up the athletes at 5am from the finishing point in Christiana and take them to the starting point in Jan Kempdorp.

Entry fees are: Marathon - R50; half-marathon - R35; and fun run - R10. Temporary numbers are also available at R10 each.

The deadline for postal entries was on Friday. Late entries will be accepted at the various starting points. Fuel assistance will be given to the three clubs with the most entries.
