They may have been born centuries and thousands of kilometres apart, but their birth places share a common name.
Many years ago Jesus Christ was born in a stable in Bethlehem, and on Friday, a baby boy was born in the middle of Jerusalem Street, one of the busiest streets in Marabastad, Pretoria.
Sandra Ndlovu, 26, was on her way to her partner's workplace on Friday afternoon when her waters broke in the middle of a busy Jerusalem Street.
As if god-sent, a former ambulance assistant and fire fighter from Kungwini municipality in Bronkhorstspruit, Nomalanga Mokwele, 33, was shopping around Marabastad stores for wedding decorations.
The mother of one arrived on Jerusalem Street just in time to deliver the baby. A crowd watched Ndlovu go into labour.
Someone had called an ambulance which was on its way.
"The young mother was screaming for help. I asked her to breath to minimise the pain.
"The child's head was already visible and after taking the 2,7kg baby boy out, I grabbed a pack of razor blades from a curious onlooker and cut the umbilical cord.
"I then tore the mother's panties and tied the umbilical cord.
"After the big healthy looking boy had stopped crying, I wrapped him in a lumber jacket given by another onlooker," said Mokwela.
Both mother and child were discharged the following day from hospital and are doing well.
