Huge field for Rotary race

More than 8500 runners will line up for the start of the 2007 Rotary Greatest Train Race tomorrow.

More than 8500 runners will line up for the start of the 2007 Rotary Greatest Train Race tomorrow.

With the Rotary Clubs of Witbank, Middelburg Cycad, and Middelburg, the runners and walkers will be celebrating the 21st anniversary of this event, which is responsible for raising much-needed funding for worthy causes in the communities of Middelburg and Witbank.

"We are delighted that the event continues to grow from year to year," said Anthony Beale, chairman of the race organising committee. "This year we have seen a 20 percent growth in the number of entries, which will further benefit the charitable organisations that have been selected as beneficiaries this year."

The day promises to be filled with fun and excitement for everyone, as the finish will be filled with great entertainment for all with a well stocked beer tent which will be accompanied by the smells of braais and other delicious goodies to eat and drink.

Over 820 running teams made up of five runners will cover the runners' relay route from Witbank Station to the Middelburg Municipal Offices and more than 1280 teams of three walkers will participate in the walkers relay.

In addition, 383 individual runners will tackle the full 28km route and 395 long-distance walkers will make their mark on the 15km walking event. - Sapa
