When the Federation of International Football Associations (Fifa) decided there should be time for national teams to play friendlies, not many countries looked forward to that for mainly one reason.
That reason was always the club versus country debate. And Bafana Bafana was one of those always caught up in that argument with its overseas-based players. Not so any more and the past week saw national teams playing international friendlies around the globe.
One such humdinger that will be highlighted on the African Soccer Television show on SABC1 Sport's Laduma programme on Sunday at 5.30pm is the one between Ghana and Senegal which ended in a 1-all draw in London on Tuesday.
Gyan Asamoah gave Ghana the lead on the stroke of half time when he ran onto Sulley Muntari's pass and drove a low shot past Tony Sylva. But El Hadji Diouf had the last word when he pounced on Babacar Gueye's shot and finished from close range in the 73rd minute.
The other game on offer is the Bafana Bafana friendly with the Scots at the Pittodrie stadium which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the South Africans.
Because local is lekker, the fast-paced SAA Supa 8 quarterfinal game between Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates could not be left behind. The Ghost will in all likelihood look forward to a repeat dose of those two well taken goals that saw them through to the last four.
Other highlights in the show are of the 2007 U-17 Four-Nation Cadet Tournament - Gambia's 2-0 win over Ivory Coast on their way to beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final.
