A woman and her two sons who were arrested for allegedly beating her husband to death at the weekend were granted bail yesterday.
But the three suspects could not afford to raise the required bail of R2000 each set by the Giyani magistrates' court in Limpopo.
They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on September 21.
The suspects are Parasina Mabunda, 38, who was the legal wife of the deceased, and her two sons Eleck Mokwakwa, 19, and Aaron Mathebula, 18.
It is not clear why the two boys use different surnames but police yesterday confirmed that they were "blood brothers", who shared the same mother.
The two boys allegedly ganged up with their mother on Saturday night and assaulted her husband William Mabunda, 42, with an assortment of objects after an argument.
Mabunda was left for dead in his hut at Ndhambi village near Giyani.
One of Mabunda's relatives only discovered what had happened the following afternoon when he went to his house.
He found Mabunda screaming for help while lying in a pool of blood.
The relative then called an ambulance to take Mabunda to Nkhensani Hospital where he died on arrival.
Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe, police spokesman in the Giyani area, said they were still investigating the motive behind the attack.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that Mabunda was unemployed and that he lived with his wife and two "sons".
"We are currently investigating the matter with the hope of getting to the bottom of it.
"We will also visit the village to interview witnesses and neighbours who might help us unravel the real motive for the attack," said Ngoepe.
