South Africans should be proud for having one of the greatest soccer administrators in Irvin Khoza, a successful Soweto-based businessman who is the chairman of Orlando Pirates.
This was the view of George Stainton, the chief executive of Ellis Park World of Sport, a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) company with 51 percent black ownership.
"Dr Khoza has brought a real sense of stability to what we are doing. He has provided leadership in terms of the whole [Greater Ellis Park] precinct upgrade. The man is a great asset of South African sport," said Stainton.
Pirates are shareholders in the empowerment company and were part of the stakeholders who signed a historic deal early this year with Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd to own and manage the sports venue.
In terms of the deal, the Gauteng Lions have passed on the management of Ellis Park Precinct to the company, which is led by Khoza as chairman. The BEE consortium is made up of interza.lesego, Pirates and Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd.
The company is now managing the property assets of the Golden Lions Rugby Union and Standard Bank Arena. In the past, the job was the responsibility of the Golden Lions.
Khoza is adamant that the deal, the first in the world involving a soccer club and rugby union, will help a lot in uplifting the decaying surroundings of the stadium.
Pirates' development programme will relocate from Mayfair to the precinct.
