FANA WRAPS UP PREPARATIONS

Mzonke Fana and his mentor Zola Koti have arrived in Gauteng to wrap up Fana's preparations for the defence of his IBF junior lightweight title against Javier Alvarez next weekend.

Mzonke Fana and his mentor Zola Koti have arrived in Gauteng to wrap up Fana's preparations for the defence of his IBF junior lightweight title against Javier Alvarez next weekend.

The "Rose of Khayelitsha" will collide with the Argentinian at the Banquet Hall in Klerksdorp on 31 August.

Their clash will be staged jointly by promoter Branco Milenkovic, the North West sports department and the Matlosana Municipality.

It will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow at 10pm.

Fana will use Norman Hlabane's gym in Turffontein and Rob MacLoed's gym in Doornfontein.

Fana has used the gyms of Manny Fernandez and Nick Durandt but will not use either gym this time around.

Isaac Hlatswayo, who sharpened him for his fight with Randy Suico for the WBC number one spot in 2004, has left Fernandez' s camp for Durandt and the existence of Cassius Baloyi in the Durandt camp disqualifies it because Baloyi could be Fana's next opponent if the latter gets past Alvarez.

But Baloyi must first get past Gairy St Clair for the IBF's number one spot in November. Koti did not rule out the presence of Durandt or Fernandez in Fana's corner. - Bongani Magasela
