The baby, who was kidnapped from Tshilidzini Hospital in Limpopo last week, has been returned to its biological mother.

Police yesterday confirmed the infant's safe return, a few hours before alleged baby-napper Thabelo Portia Mulaudzi, 18, of Itsani appeared in the Thohoyandou magistrates' court.

She was not asked to plead and the case was postponed to August 31.

Mulaudzi's legal representative Jeff Tshirado asked the court to postpone the matter to allow him time to study the charge and prepare a bail application for his client.

Contrary to initial police reports, the Department of Health yesterday said the woman had been arrested by hospital security officials.

Department spokesman Phuti Seloba said: "The woman never left the hospital with the baby. She was found dressing the baby, and could not explain what she was doing."
