A 20-year-old man from the Jamaica informal settlement outside East London is fighting for his life in hospital after he was allegedly shot by a shebeen owner at the weekend.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mtati Tana yesterday said the victim was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.

A case of attempted murder is being investigated against the 52-year-old Buffalo Flats shebeen owner who allegedly shot the man, East London police said yesterday.

"The injured man apparently fought with patrons at the shebeen," said Tana.

He said the fight started when the man allegedly became aggressive and tried to force open the security gate leading to the premises. In an attempt to keep the man out, the owner fired a warning shot. Despite the warning shot, the man persisted in trying to force the gate open.

"Two more shots were fired in his direction and one hit him in the left arm and another struck him in the stomach," said Tana.

An ambulance was called and the man was rushed to hospital. He remains in a critical condition.

Three spent cartridges and a licensed revolver were found on the scene.

The shebeen owner has not been arrested.
