I have just returned from a trip through Botswana and Namibia and was very impressed by the cleanliness of the larger Namibian cities. What a pleasure to travel there. But in the countryside of Namibia and Botswana, it was only a little bit better than here.
In South Africa, there is not a stretch of road or pathway that is not littered. Especially annoying are the terrible red cans with their logo, keep SA beautiful and clean. The blight of the beer bottles along our roads is very disturbing as are the juice and plastic bottles.
Our former environment minister Vali Moosa at least saved us from the blight of the plastic bags by introducing appropriate laws. Why is our present minister not doing anything about the nonreturnable beer, fruit juice bottles and plastic bottles? We seem to live behind the moon when it comes to legislation to free taxpayers from the burden of litterbugs and a careless profit-hungry industry.
Why should I as a non-littering citizen pay for having the country cleaned?
In most progressive thinking countries, you can get a deposit of about 50c, or even more, for every glass and plastic bottle.
If we were proud South Africans, we would not ruin our country the way we do.
