A Benoni woman, abandoned on the Bapsfontein Road by her drunk husband, found the wreckage of his bakkie with their seriously injured toddler son inside, Ekurhuleni metro police said yesterday.
The 43-year-old man tossed his 37-year-old wife out of the vehicle after an argument about the speed at which he was driving, said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman Inspector Mveli Nhlapo.
They had been on their way home to Crystal Park, Benoni, from a visit to family in Bronkhorstspruit.
The woman stood at the side of the road as he sped off, allegedly drunk, with their three-year-old son inside the car.
A little while later, she received a lift.
She stopped the driver when they passed what she thought was the wreckage of her husband's Toyota Hilux bakkie, said Nhlapo.
The husband had apparently lost control of the vehicle, and it had rolled several times, Nhlapo said.
Both he and his son were seriously injured. They were taken to Temba Hospital, near Hammanskraal.
The man was later transferred to Pretoria Academic Hospital when his condition worsened.
The child was stable. Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving. - Sapa
