Police in Limpopo urged people, especially children, to use taxis and other safe means of transport and not accept lifts from strangers.

Their call came after a 15-year-old Seshego High School pupil was brutally raped by an unknown man on Tuesday on the road between Lebowakgomo and Polokwane.

According to police, the school girl from Moletji, was hitch-hiking home after visiting friends in Lebowakgomo.

A maroon Mercedes-Benz stopped and the driver offered her a lift.

Captain Mamphaswa Seabi said the driver demanded she pay him R20 as a fare.

"After she paid, the driver drove into an area of dense bush.

"He started taking off his clothes and ordered the girl to strip.

"The girl told the investigating officer she was terrified.

"She said the man had threatened to sjambok her if she refused to cooperate," said Seabi.

Seabi said police investigations were continuing. He called on the public to come forward with information.
