The class boycotts by Gauteng teachers each time their colleagues appear in court on charges related to last month's public sector strike is lamentable.

Enough time has been lost and teachers are expected to help pupils recover. Further strikes will only disadvantage innocent children.

Teachers who have been arrested have the right to argue their case in court. And the onus is on the state to prove its case.

Supporting colleagues in difficult times is a comradely gesture that is understandable.

But stayaways should be avoided at all costs. Teachers are urged to give priority to the educational needs of the children, given that exams are around the corner.
