Sixteen Tshwane University of Technology students were arrested for public violence yesterday morning.

The students had blocked the entrance of the main campus at Premos, Pretoria, preventing staff and other students from entering.

More than 100 students sustained minor injuries when police fired rubber bullets and used a water canon to disperse a group of about 1000 protesting students.

Pretoria police spokesman Captain Lucas Sithole said the students were charged with public violence and released on a warning.

President of the Pan-Africanist Student Movement of Azania Mametlwe Sebei said the students were demanding the immediate resignation of the principal and the disbanding of the university council.

"We are aggrieved by management's failure to deal with the current workers' strike because in the end it's students who are affected," said Sebei.
