A human skull was retrieved from a pit toilet in a graveyard in Phalama, Mutale in Limpopo, police said this week.
The skull, which is believed to be that of a person in their forties, was retrieved by police after residents complained of a strong stench coming from a toilet in the graveyard.
Mutale police spokesman Inspector Fhulufhelo Netshitongwe said they had "to dig up the pit toilet because of the stench. We found a human skull wrapped in a bag.
"The skull was badly decomposed. At this stage we do not know who it belongs to or where it comes from, or if it is male or female.
"We appeal to members of the community to help us with any information so that we can try to locate the next of kin," said Netshitongwe.
Police said they suspect that the victim might have been decapitated before the head was thrown into the pit toilet.
"We have opened a murder case and an investigation is still under way," said Netshitongwe.
Should this prove to be another muti murder, it would increase the number of unsolved related cases in Limpopo. These have been increasing since 2004.
Four inyangas were sentenced to life in prison last year for the muti murder of Maanda Sendedza.
