Patson "Sparks" Banda, Zacharia "Computer" Lamola and Nkosi "Let Them Dance" Molala are some of the soccer legends roped in by the City of Johannesburg to assist in the development of the sport.

Amos Masondo, executive mayor of Johannesburg, said they would also be working closely with the South African Football Association (Safa) as the custodian of the sport in the country.

Another soccer legend, James Mabena, who is employed by the Transnet Football School of Excellence as a development coach, is also involved in the city's initiated project.

"It is a tripartite alliance between the city, Safa and the soccer legends which we are confident will play a significant role in the development of soccer in the City of Johannesburg.

"We have already started with the process by introducing the Mayoral Cup this year, which I must say has gone extremely well and we are working hard to make it bigger and better.

"It is part of the build-up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals and beyond. Our aim is to use this tournament to produce quality players for Majimbos, Amajita, the Under-23s and Bafana Bafana. We are encouraged by the support we have been getting from our communities."
