The Zion Christian Church will dedicate five minutes of every Sunday preaching road safety.

This was announced by the church's leader, Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane, at a Moloto Road mass prayer in Mpumalanga on Sunday.

"I encourage my pastors to do this so that lives on our roads can be saved.

"This call shows that the ZCC takes road safety seriously," Lekganyane said.

Hundreds of thousands of ZCC members prayed for a reduction in accidents on the notorious road in a two-day mass prayer.

This road forms part of a link between Pretoria and Kwa-Mhlanga, and is used by more than 40000 travellers daily.

It has been labelled "the killer road" because of its high accident rate.

This year alone it has claimed 21 lives from 38 accidents between April and July.

"Let us join the premier of Mpumalanga, Thabang Makwetla, in saying we have had enough and will not allow this road terror caused by negligent and reckless driving to continue maiming our brothers and sisters," said Lekganyane.

Makwetla said the prayer was arranged to support and comfort families who lost their loved ones to road accidents.

"We hope this prayer meeting will generate broad awareness that will help us turn the corner in the protracted challenge to make Moloto Road safe and secure for road users," he said.

Makwetla said more work still needed to be done.

"This includes intense public communication to get the cooperation and participation of everybody to turn improvements made on the road into a benefit for the community," said Makwetla.

He said a change in mindset needed to be encouraged.

"We must inculcate the culture of courtesy and calm among drivers towards other road users, a high voluntary compliance level with road regulations such as not cutting corners when procuring driver's licences, and abstaining from drinking and driving.

"These basics and others will help us get somewhere in life," Makwetla said.
