A Grade 11 pupil was arrested yesterday for the murder of his older lover.

Her body was found hidden under trees in Mamba Reserve, near Eshowe, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Shortly after the pupil's arrest, police arrested two alleged hitmen who were found in possession of the bloodied murder weapon.

Lamulile Mlambo, 25, was killed because she allegedly wanted to end the relationship with the besotted pupil.

According to the deceased's family, Mlambo was last seen in the company of her boyfriend on Sunday.

The suspect, 21, is a pupil at Mnyakanya High School in Nkandla.

Members of the community that Sowetan spoke to expressed shock at the murder, saying no such incident has ever happened in their area.

The deceased's family became worried when she did not come home that evening. They spent the whole night searching for her.

They even contacted the suspect who said he was with Mlambo at Eshowe, about 50km away from her home.

Mlambo's body was found with a gunshot wound in the head the next day by her sister, Ncamsile, who alerted the police.

It is believed that Mlambo was raped before she was shot. She was then apparently dragged on the gravel road for about 100m to where her body was found.

Shortly after she was found the police arrested the boyfriend.

He is being held in police custody while investigations continue.

Also on the same day, police traced the murder weapon which led to the arrest of two other suspects who were found in possession of a 9mm pistol with bloodstains on it.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said a bloody patch and a 9mm spent cartridge led them to where the victim was shot.

He said the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the back of her head.

"It is rumoured that the victim intended to end her relationship with the suspect. This might have led the suspect to murder her," said Naicker.
