A Mpumalanga policeman briefly appeared before the KaBokweni Magistrates' Court yesterday on drunken driving charges.

Inspector Steven Mashile (40) was not asked to plead and was released after paying R500 bail. The matter was postponed to next month.

Mashile was arrested during a midnight police raid on Friday. He has been behind bars since then.

"He was found driving a state vehicle while under the influence of alcohol," said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesman, Superintendent Sibongile Nkosi, yesterday.

During his arrest, the policeman, who is attached to the KaNyamazane police station, allegedly claimed that he had been investigating a case in the Daantjie area.
