The most revered of classical ballets, SwanLake, is back on the local scene.

Swan Lake, presented by the South African Ballet Theatre, opens at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in Braamfontein on August 24. It will run until September 16.

The production premiered locally in 2001 and ballet lovers were overawed.

For years, many companies have created various versions of this great Russian classic.

It is a lovely story told through beautiful music and extraordinary ballet. Swan Lake is the story of Prince Siegfried, who, while out hunting swans in a lake, falls in love with the beautiful princess Odette, who has been turned into a swan by the evil magician, Von Rothbart.

The spell can only be broken if a prince falls in love with her.

Siegfried invites Odette to his birthday celebrations where he has to choose a bride.

But to get the whole story of this classical tale, you must watch the ballet yourself.

Swan Lake was first performed by the Ballet of the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in 1877. When it first appeared, it was not popular, but over time, people have grown to love it.
