Gay celebrity designer Iko Mash is this morning counting the cost of not having insurance. His lounge caught fire yesterday morning, destroying his valuable iPod, cellphone and a couch.
Mash, real name Billy Mothola Mashiloane, said he arrived at his flat in Blairgowrie, north Johannesburg, at 1am after a party.
He went to sleep and at 8am he was woken up by a neighbour who noticed flames coming from his lounge. He said he discovered that a damaged electrical fuse had started the fire.
The cross-dressing celebrity make-up artist and designer said he had spent the night out with friends.
Only his living room was burnt. A sobbing Mashiloane said: "I'm very lucky that none of the other rooms caught fire."
He said he was not sure of the replacement costs of the damaged items.
"I have no insurance, but I have to replace the carpets in the whole flat."
When Sowetan visited him yesterday afternoon, he was waiting for police to take a statement.
A few weeks ago, Mash revealed how he was repeatedly raped from the age of 12 until 15.
He said he realised he was gay when he started playing with dolls as a kid and that earned him the nickname "Cinderella".
He recently released his debut album.
