A suspected Limpopo serial rapist who tried to escape arrest by attempting suicide has been hospitalised, police said yesterday.

Police said the suspect, 42, of Hamutsha in Thohoyandou, allegedly raped three young girls last weekend.

According to Superintendent Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, the suspect was being sought by the police's child protection unit last Saturday while he hid in the bush.

The victims - aged one, eight and nine years - alleged they were offered 50c each to keep quiet about the rapes.

The suspect was arrested on Wednesday at his home while trying to hang himself.

Mushavhanamadi said police, with the help of members of the community, broke down the door to the house and cut the rope as the suspect gasped for breath.

"The suspect is under police guard at Tshilidzini Hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained from trying to commit suicide," said Mushavhanamadi.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges of rape.
